Are Privacy Policies Necessary? What Are Your Options?

Nobody ever reads a privacy policy, right? You see links for them from time to time at the bottom of a website but you never click on them. So … do you really need one?

That depends.

  • If you collect ANY information from visitors to your website … then the answer is yes.
  • If you have a Contact Us form on your website … then the answer is yes.
  • If you use Google Analytics on your website … then the answer is yes.

Generally speaking, every website needs a privacy policy.

If you don’t, you’re at risk of being sued. In fact, states are proposing laws that will allow consumers to sue businesses anywhere in the US for not having a compliant Privacy Policy [source]. These privacy laws are changing all the time so you need to keep those privacy policies up to date as well. Ugh.

Fortunately, I’ve got your back. I have three (3) options for you and your website. You can read all the details here.

Option 01:
Generic Word Press Privacy Policy (free)
It’s a generic, run-of-the-mill, nothing fancy policy that I include with every web design project. Not an ideal option but better than nothing.

Option 02:
User-Generated Privacy Policy (free-ish)
I like the website Termsfeed.com where you enter your business & website information and they generate policy for you to send to me to include on your website. It’s free but they have a pro version for a small fee.

Option 03:
Professional, Auto-Updating Privacy Policy

This one’s awesome. It’s robust, professional, and will even auto-update as new laws are enacted. There’s no better privacy policy than this one. Cost: $10/month … BUT it’s also included for free if you’re on my Premium Maintenance & Security Plan.

If you have questions about your website and whether or not it needs a privacy policy or which option is best for you, feel free to let me know. Happy to answer any questions.
