That One Time You Don’t Need to be In Front of a Camera

You know that you need a video for your business. Video marketing is one of the most powerful ways to market and grow your business. It helps you connect with your customers and develop a level of trust faster than any other medium. But … you have to be in front of the camera. Ugh! For some, they’d rather die a slow and painful death than be in front of the camera. So the question is, do you HAVE to be in front of the camera for your marketing videos?

Your video starring YOU! Here are the advantages

If you, the small business owner, are the one in front of the camera starring in your own video, there are several advantages, as painful or uncomfortable as it may be. For example:

  • Video helps us humanize a business. People don’t do business with other businesses, they do business with people. When we see people in a video, we see them as human beings. We can relate to them. We even get to know them. It develops trust, and trust is at the forefront of doing business with a company. That trust comes faster through video than by any other medium.
  • Along with humanizing the business, when YOU are the one in front of the camera, you can help people feel comfortable with you, especially as you come across as real, authentic and human … flaws, quirks and all!
  • Relationships are built faster using videos. If you’re going to be interacting with customers or clients in person, you really should be the one in front of the camera. It’ll help create familiarity when they come into your store or business. The same can be said if you’re an online business. Remember, YOU can be just as much of your brand as your logo, colors, and fonts.
  • If you are the one starring in your video, it’s also cheaper than hiring an actor … or buying lunch for your friend to do it for you. 😉

There is one BIG reason you would want to have someone else be behind the camera. You may be nervous, shy, or generally uncomfortable in front of the camera … and that’s okay! But, if it’s holding you back from shooting your first (and subsequent) videos, then have someone else be the star! Whether it’s a friend, a co-worker, or someone off the street … the important thing is that you don’t want it to hold you back from creating your videos. Perhaps in time you’ll be the one being the star. But until you feel comfortable, have someone else put on the make-up.

One of the best places to start when it comes to being in front of the camera is Instagram (or Facebook) stories. When you shoot and post a Story, those videos will disappear forever in 24 hours. It’s a great place to practice and become comfortable shooting videos of yourself! Just remember, it won’t be perfect … you might stutter, say something weird, the part in your hair might be slightly off … and THAT’S OKAY! Because it’s you … a real, authentic, human being in front of the camera and that gives your customers someone to relate with … and eventually do business with.
